How to Build Gunpla Part 2 – Panel Lining

In this next part, I will teach you how to panel line. Panel lining helps to bring out the molding details of a model kit. It helps gives parts a shadow effect, and make the details easier to see.

Typically, you only need two colours: grey and black. Grey is used for white and lighter colours, and blue is used for blue and darker colours. There is also the option of brown, but that is only used for red and yellow, which is quite rare.

As you can see, using the grey marker, I have detailed the line on the bazooka.

To clean up excess ink, you can use a cotton bud, a toothpick or an eraser to clean up. If you messed up badly, I found putting water on the cotton bud helps as well.

Of course, you can use your hands to rub it as well.

So, yeah. Unfortunately, on this model kit, the RG Gundam Mk-ll, there isn’t really that may panel lines. For a model with more panel lines, the effect will be much more noticeable. Finally, the other purpose of lining markers are to cover up nub marks. After cleaning up nubs, you will notice a white stress mark or discoloration on the part. If it’s a grey, black or any dark colour parts, you can use a lining marker to hide it.
